US construction equipment giant Caterpillar announced it was to cut about 20,000 jobs, after its profits slumped by 32 percent. This job cut equates to about 18 percent of the company’s entire workforce, and will also be accompanied by freezes in overtime and salaries. Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. Home Depot, the nation’s largest home improvement chain has announced that it is going to make some major moves. Firstly, they are going to eliminate 7000 positions. Sprint Nextel, the 3rd largest wireless service provider has announced it is going to cut roughly 8000 jobs. This huge cut will represent approximately 15% of Sprint Nextel’s entire workforce.

ABX Air Inc, an air cargo services provider operating out of Wilmington, Ohio, and 15 hubs throughout the United States, announced that it will ultimately cut 1900 jobs thruout the United States, starting with 838 jobs being cut at it’s main hub in Wilmington.
The cuts followed an announcement from DHL EXPRESS, ABX’s primary customer, that it will halt a “substantial portion” of its domestic point-to-point shipping operations, which will significantly decrease DHL’s dependancy on ABX.

EBay, the largest online auction website in the world, says it is laying off 10% of its workforce, as part of a move to streamline the business. The amount is approximately 1,000 staff and hundreds of temporary workers. It is also expected a number of “open” positions will be closed as well.
They are looking to streamline their business, and are looking to take on another venture, which is partially to blame for the job cut announcement.

Providence Rhode Island based Textron Systems, suppliers of weapons systems, surveillance systems, marine craft, armored vehicles and aircraft control components, has announced plans to cut 2200 jobs in 2009, as part of corporate downsizing.
Continued weakening in economic conditions is the mentioned reasoning for the latest announcment.
Textron, which is also in the commercial finance business, will be eliminating that division completely.
